If you’re packing up to spend the winter in a warmer climate, good for you! But before you leave town, you’ve got a lot to do, other than just eating up the leftover shrimp and taking out the trash. Here are a few tips for keeping your home healthy while you’re gone.

1. Pre-Departure Cleaning

Give your home a thorough cleaning. Vacuum all carpets, rugs, and floors to remove dirt and dust that can accumulate while you're away.

2. Empty the Vacuum

Empty the dustbin or replace the vacuum bags before you leave. A full bag or dustbin can lead to reduced performance, but also - if your vacuum's charcoal filter is older than a year, or if your vacuum doesn't have a charcoal filter, odors build up while you're gone.

3. Close Windows and Seal Gaps

Before you leave, make sure all windows and doors are properly closed and sealed to prevent dust and keep pests out of your home.

4. Unplug of Turn Off

Unplug your vacuum cleaner, unused equipment and small appliances to prevent any potential electrical issues or fire hazards while you're away. Plus you'll save energy.

5. Check for Mold and Mildew

If you live in a humid climate, ensure that your home's humidity levels are controlled. Use a dehumidifer or ensure proper ventilation to prevent mold and mildew growth, which can be a problem when you're away.

6. Keep Your House Above Water

To protect against flooding from a washing machine or hose failure, shut off the water supply. Also, in climates with sustained freezing temperatures, disconnect external water hoses.

7. Regular Maintenance

If you leave your home for an extended period, have a friend or neighbor check on your home periodically to make sure everything is in good condition.

One thing that won't stay up north is dust. That's why a compact vacuum should be on your packing list. In your RV, camper or trailer, or winter abode, the SupraQuik and its attachments can help keep your floors clean, counters crumb-free and even blow leaves, dirt, sand and grass off your steps or entryway. Perfectly portable and loaded with tools, the SupraQuik is the perfect travel vacuum.
